Each of
my sculptures grows from a repetitive task, sometimes
performed thousands of times, which slowly becomes a complex
of impulses. The intensity of focus that each element
takes to create leaves a residue of energy that is then
owned by the metal. Heat and pressure applied with purpose
leads to growth that reflects an intelligent universe.
This is a ceremony that has been performed for millennia
by craftsmen in every culture as servitude to the precious
minerals born within the Earth. In order to access
this sacred role I try to avoid creating sculpture that is
symbolic. Each creation should be entirely
self-contained and independent. In that sense it is
what James Joyce referred to as ‘proper art,’
meaning that it does not exist as a critique of ideas
(didactic) nor as cheapened access to something desirable
(pornographic), but as a composed experience that holds
the mind. This allows for the birth of a ‘proper
being’ which expresses the possibility for infinite expansion in all
directions, has organization on every scale, and
assumes responsibility for its own existence.
Only a small portion of my creative time is spent on what I consider to be art, however. The Architecture and Ornament section of this site shows some of the commissions that I have done for various people. While I enjoy this type of work greatly. it comes from a different place in my heart. I hope that one day I will have earned the time and rescources to spend much more of my energy on my more self endulgent desire to create art.
My family and I are currently restoring an historic firehouse on St Roch ave. which will one day be a studio, gallery and residence. It is an immense job and will take many years to complete, but I believe that when it is finished it will provide endless opportunities for growth.
